PhD student researcher on Systems Biology in CALSYS open

PhD student researcher on Systems Biology
(biologists, biochemists or chemists)
In the FORSYS Junior Research Group for Cancer and Aging (CALSYS)

In CALSYS we investigate the role that the p53-p21-pRB, p16-pRB and other signalling
pathways have in the induction and maintenance of senescence growth arrest and how their
responses are combined to decide whether the cell must undergo cell cycle arrest, senescence or apoptosis in response to (cancer or aging related) DNA damage or stress signals. The aim of the project is to improve our understanding of the relation between cancer and aging using a systems biology approach. The project includes two main scientific parts: i) the investigation of the signalling pathways linking cancer with aging, and ii) the development of methodologies for the qualitative global analysis of cell signalling models.

Job description
We look for a doctoral student with a Master Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or
Chemistry interested on getting experience in Systems Biology of cell signalling systems. Tasks to be performed include:
  • Design and performance of quantitative biological experiments.
  • Text mining of scientific literature.
  • Mathematical modelling of signalling pathways in cancer and aging.
Requirements:
Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Chemistry.
Interest in interdisciplinary research in the life sciences.
Fluent English and/or German.
Proficient in Mathematics.
Previous experience in systems biology, signalling science or quantitative
techniques will be very positively valued.
Willing to travel across Europe.

Salary: E13, full time job (approx. 2.600 Euro/month gross income).
Project starting date: June-July 2008.
