Description:            The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.
The School of Natural Sciences at the University of California, Merced announces a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in the area of systems biology. Systems biology is a research approach that uses high-throughput comprehensive datasets and integrates multiple types of analysis to relate the overall function of an organism, cell, organelle, or regulatory pathway to the underlying physiological, biochemical or biophysical processes, with an ultimate goal of a predictive understanding of the system's behavior. Applicants of special relevance to research emphases at UC Merced include gene expression mechanisms, RNA biology in development and regeneration, mechanisms of cell fate decisions, complex diseases such as diabetes or inflammatory disorders, and microbial systems. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the Health Sciences Research Institute at UC Merced and with UC campuses and UC-affiliated national laboratories.

Qualifications:         Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or other relevant field, and a record of research, publication, and teaching commensurate with a faculty appointment at the UC at the assistant professor level. Candidates should demonstrate their potential to establish an externally-funded research program in systems biology, have a demonstrated record of collaboration, and be able to teach biology effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Salary:         Salary is negotiable, based on University of California payscale.
